What to Wear to a South Indian Wedding: A Saree Guide for Every Function and Role
Share
Quick answer: For the muhurtham, wear a Kanchipuram silk saree in a rich colour with zari, and avoid black, white and the colour the bride is wearing. For the evening reception, choose jewel tones, pastels with silver zari, or a lighter, more contemporary weave. The bride and the mothers wear the richest silk of the day. Sisters and guests can play with colour and lighter zari.

What to wear for each function
| Function | When | What to wear |
|---|---|---|
| Nichayathartham (engagement) | Morning or evening | A Kanchipuram silk in a soft or festive colour; lighter zari than the wedding day |
| Nalangu, haldi, mehendi | Daytime | Light silk, or a handwoven cotton saree with a zari border; yellows, greens and pinks |
| Muhurtham (wedding) | Early morning | Rich Kanchipuram silk with a zari border and pallu, in traditional colours |
| Reception | Evening | Jewel tones, pastels with silver zari, zari by zari or a contemporary Kanchipuram |
What should the bride wear for the muhurtham?
The bride wears the richest Kanchipuram silk of the wedding. Traditional colours are deep red, maroon, arakku, mustard and gold, with a heavy zari border and pallu. Motifs with meaning are a lovely choice: annam (swan) for fidelity, mayil (peacock) for grace, yaanai (elephant) for prosperity, and a temple border. For the reception, many brides change into a lighter colour, a zari by zari weave or a pastel with silver zari.
Choose the muhurtham saree first, then plan the other functions around it so the colours never repeat.
What should the mother of the bride or groom wear?
The mothers stand beside the couple through every ritual, so their sarees appear in almost every photograph. Choose a rich Kanchipuram silk with a classic border: rettai pettu, temple or korvai contrast borders all photograph beautifully. Pick a colour that sits well next to the bride's without matching it: if she wears red, deep green, royal blue, purple or mustard all work.
What should the sister or a close cousin wear?
Sisters have the most freedom. Choose a colour that complements the bride, with lighter zari than the mothers so the generations read clearly in photographs. Pinks, corals, teal, lavender and contrast pallus are lovely. Sisters move constantly on the wedding day, so a feather-light drape is worth asking for.
What should a wedding guest wear?
For the muhurtham, a Kanchipuram silk in a festive colour with a moderate zari border is the respectful choice. Kattam, vari and butta weaves are elegant without competing with the family. For the reception, you can go richer or more contemporary.
Which colours should I avoid at a South Indian wedding?
At the muhurtham, avoid black and white, which many families consider inauspicious for the ceremony. Avoid the bride's colour, usually red or maroon. Black, silver and deep jewel tones are welcome at the evening reception, though it is worth checking with the family.
How do I plan sarees for a wedding week?
- Start with the muhurtham. It is the most photographed moment and the richest saree.
- Vary weight through the week. Light silk or cotton for daytime functions, rich silk for the wedding, contemporary silk for the reception.
- Never repeat a colour family across the main functions.
- Plan the blouses early. Tell your tailor where you want the border and buttas to sit before the fabric is cut.
- Do a full drape at home with your jewellery a week before.

What should I wear to an outdoor or destination wedding?
For an outdoor or destination wedding, choose a lighter silk you can carry and move in. A feather-light Kanchipuram silk with a medium zari border travels well, holds its pleats and still feels ceremonial. Avoid very heavy zari in the heat of the day, and choose colours that photograph well in natural light: jewel tones, corals, mint and soft pinks. For a beach or garden reception, a pastel silk with silver zari is a graceful choice. Pack each silk folded in its own muslin cloth, and carry a few extra safety pins for windy settings.
What I have learned from customers
When a customer asks me to help her choose a wedding saree, my first question is never about colour. It is: what is your role, and what time is the function? Those two answers narrow the choice more than anything else. A mother of the bride at a six in the morning muhurtham needs something very different from a cousin at an evening reception.
The second thing I ask is which colours the bride and the mothers have already chosen. Many of the most beautiful family photographs I have seen work because the sarees complement each other rather than match. And I always suggest a full drape at home with the jewellery, a week before, because that is when small problems with the blouse or the pleats show up while there is still time to fix them.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a guest saree before knowing the bride's colours.
- Wearing the heaviest zari for a long outdoor daytime function.
- Matching the bride's colour too closely.
- Leaving the blouse to the last week, with no time for a fitting.
- Skipping a full drape trial with jewellery before the day.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wear black to a South Indian wedding?
Avoid black at the muhurtham, which many families consider inauspicious. Black with zari is lovely at the evening reception.
Can a guest wear red to a South Indian wedding?
It is best to avoid a red close to the bride's. A different shade with a contrast border or pallu is fine.
Should the mother of the bride wear Kanchipuram silk?
Yes. A rich Kanchipuram silk with a classic border is the traditional choice, in a colour that complements the bride's without matching it.
Can I wear a cotton saree to a wedding?
At a daytime function such as nalangu or haldi, yes. For the muhurtham and the reception, choose silk.
How early should I buy my wedding saree?
Two to three months ahead gives time to choose, plan the blouse with your tailor and do a full drape trial.
