How to Care for and Store a Kanchipuram Silk Saree So It Lasts for Decades
Share
Quick answer: A Kanchipuram silk saree is dry clean only. After wearing, air it in shade for a few hours, then store it folded in muslin or soft cotton, away from sunlight and moisture. Refold it along different lines every few months so the creases never set into the silk or the zari. With this care, it can be cherished for decades and passed down.

How do I clean a Kanchipuram silk saree?
Dry clean only. Pure silk and pure zari react badly to water, detergent and wringing: the silk can lose its lustre and the zari can dull. Choose a cleaner who handles pure silk, and tell them the saree carries zari. Most silk sarees do not need cleaning after every wear; airing is often enough.
What should I do right after wearing it?
Hang it over a padded hanger or a clean line in shade for a few hours, so body warmth and moisture leave the silk. Check for marks while it airs. Fold it only when it is completely cool and dry.
How do I deal with a stain?
Blot it gently with a clean, dry cloth. Never rub, and never apply water, soap or stain remover to silk. Take it to a dry cleaner as soon as you can and tell them what caused the stain. The sooner it is treated, the better it comes out.
How should I store a Kanchipuram silk saree?
- Wrap it in muslin or soft cotton. Silk needs to breathe. Plastic traps moisture and can yellow the silk over time.
- Keep it away from sunlight and damp. Sunlight fades colour; humidity dulls zari.
- Store heavy zari sarees flat and folded, not hanging for long periods, which strains the silk.
- Fold with the zari facing inwards to protect it.
- Refold every few months along different lines, so no crease sets permanently.
- Air it out in shade a few times a year, even if you have not worn it.
How do I iron a silk saree?
Use a low silk setting and iron from the reverse. Place a thin cotton cloth over the zari border and pallu, and never let a hot iron touch the zari directly. Steam lightly if needed, but never let the silk get wet.
Why does zari dull, and can it be prevented?
Zari dulls mainly through moisture, humidity, perfume and long contact with plastic. Pure zari, cared for well, keeps a warm glow for many years. Store the saree dry, wrapped in muslin, wear perfume before you drape, and air the saree regularly.
How is a cotton saree cared for differently?
A handwoven cotton saree, like our Ayraa Nithya line, is made to be worn often, so the rule is different. Dry clean it for the first wash to set the colour. After that, hand wash it gently in cold water with a mild detergent, on its own. Never soak, scrub, wring or machine wash it. Dry it in shade and iron on a medium cotton setting from the reverse, with a cloth over the zari border. Deep cotton colours release a little dye over the first few washes.

How do I store silk sarees in a humid city?
Humidity is the biggest enemy of silk and zari. In coastal and humid cities, air your silk sarees in shade more often, every month or two in the monsoon. Keep them in a dry cupboard away from bathroom and kitchen walls, wrapped in muslin, never in plastic. A sachet of silica gel or a cloth pouch of cloves in the cupboard, not touching the saree, helps keep the air dry.
How do I pack a silk saree for travel?
Fold it along its existing folds, wrap it in muslin or a cotton cloth, and lay it flat at the top of your suitcase, away from liquids and perfume. Unpack and hang it to air for a few hours on arrival, so the creases relax before you drape it.
What I have learned from customers
Customers often ask me whether a silk saree can be washed at home just once, after a small stain or a single wear. My answer is always no: a pure Kanchipuram silk saree is dry clean only, and most of the time it does not need cleaning at all. Airing it in shade after every wear does more for the silk than frequent dry cleaning.
The other habit I encourage is refolding. Sarees kept on the same folds for years develop creases that can weaken the silk and the zari along those lines. Refolding every few months takes a minute and protects a saree for decades.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Storing silk in plastic covers for months.
- Keeping a saree on the same folds for years.
- Spraying perfume or hairspray after draping.
- Pressing a hot iron directly on the zari.
- Hanging a heavy zari saree for long periods.
- Washing a silk saree at home "just once".
