Mayil is the Tamil word for peacock, one of the oldest motifs in Kanchipuram weaving. Here each peacock is woven into the turquoise body as a zari butta.
Chakra means wheel. The round zari medallions run in vertical bands down the saree, and each one holds a Yaanai, the Tamil word for elephant.
Butta is a single motif woven into the body of the saree on the loom, not printed or embroidered on afterwards.
Care Guide
Dry clean only. This is pure silk with pure zari, and it should not be washed at home.
- Dry clean only to preserve the richness of the silk and zari
- Store folded in a breathable muslin cloth or cotton bag, never in plastic for long periods
- Keep away from direct sunlight, moisture and perfume
- Use sweat pads with the blouse to protect the silk from moisture
- Refold along different lines every few months and air the saree in shade
- Fold with the zari facing inwards to retain its natural sheen
- Iron on a low silk setting from the reverse, with a cloth over the fabric. Never iron directly on the zari
- Apply perfume and hairspray before draping, never on the saree
With thoughtful care, a pure Kanchipuram silk saree can be cherished for decades and may become an heirloom.
Handloom Characteristics
This saree is handwoven using traditional Kanchipuram weaving techniques, so no two pieces are identical. The following are marks of hand weaving, not defects:
- Subtle variation in the texture and sheen of the silk across the body
- Minor irregularity in the spacing or size of the Mayil buttas and Chakra medallions
- Slight variation in the tone of the zari from one area to another
- Occasional loose threads on the reverse, where the zari is carried across the motifs
Colour Representation
We photograph every saree under neutral lighting to represent its tone as accurately as possible. However, slight variations may occur due to:
- Lighting conditions
- Fabric texture and weave
- Screen or device settings
The lavender pallu is woven closely with zari, so it can read as lavender, mauve or soft gold depending on the light.
If you would like more clarity, we are happy to assist with:
- Additional close-up photos
- A personalised video call appointment
These characteristics are inherent to hand weaving and are not considered defects. They are what make each Ayraa saree truly one of a kind.
Styling Suggestions
Blouse: The saree comes with a plain lavender blouse carrying the same Mayil butta, so the contrast is already built in. Place the butta on the sleeve or at the centre back when you stitch it.
Stitching the blouse: Tell your tailor where you want the Mayil butta to sit before the fabric is cut. Butta placement has to be planned.
Jewellery: Temple gold or antique gold sits most naturally with the zari. Pearls or emeralds keep the turquoise cool and quiet.
Drape: Pleat it the usual way with the pallu over your left shoulder, so the lavender zari pallu is seen in full.
Wear it to: festive mornings, temple occasions, Deepavali, and wedding celebrations as a guest or family member.
