Butta is a single motif woven into the saree on the loom, not printed or embroidered on afterwards. Here large zari buttas sit along the border.
Manga, Yaanai and Mayil are the Tamil words for mango (the paisley motif), elephant and peacock, three of the oldest motifs in Kanchipuram weaving. Here they appear as zari buttas on the border and again across the pallu.
Vari is the Tamil word for stripes. Here slim zari stripes of small flowers and wave lines run the length of the body, each edged with a fine green line.
Self colour border means the border is woven in the same purple as the body, so the zari buttas carry the whole design.
Care Guide
Dry clean only. This is pure silk with pure zari, and it should not be washed at home.
- Dry clean only to preserve the richness of the silk and zari
- Store folded in a breathable muslin cloth or cotton bag, never in plastic for long periods
- Keep away from direct sunlight, moisture and perfume
- Use sweat pads with the blouse to protect the silk from moisture
- Refold along different lines every few months and air the saree in shade
- Fold with the zari facing inwards to retain its natural sheen
- Iron on a low silk setting from the reverse, with a cloth over the fabric. Never iron directly on the zari
- Apply perfume and hairspray before draping, never on the saree
With thoughtful care, a pure Kanchipuram silk saree can be cherished for decades and may become an heirloom.
Handloom Characteristics
This saree is handwoven using traditional Kanchipuram weaving techniques, so no two pieces are identical. The following are marks of hand weaving, not defects:
- Subtle variation in the texture and sheen of the silk across the body
- Minor irregularity in the spacing of the zari stripes and the size of the buttas
- Slight variation in the tone of the zari from one area to another
- Occasional loose threads on the reverse, where the zari is carried across the buttas and pallu
Colour Representation
We photograph every saree under neutral lighting to represent its tone as accurately as possible. However, slight variations may occur due to:
- Lighting conditions
- Fabric texture and weave
- Screen or device settings
The purple can read as violet or deep indigo depending on the light, and the zari can appear gold or antique copper gold.
If you would like more clarity, we are happy to assist with:
- Additional close-up photos
- A personalised video call appointment
These characteristics are inherent to hand weaving and are not considered defects. They are what make each Ayraa saree truly one of a kind.
Styling Suggestions
Blouse: The saree comes with a plain purple blouse with a matching border. Place a manga butta on the sleeve or at the centre back. For contrast, a green blouse picks up the fine green line in the stripes.
Stitching the blouse: Tell your tailor where you want the butta and border to sit before the fabric is cut. Their placement has to be planned.
Jewellery: Temple gold or antique gold sits most naturally with the zari. Emeralds pick up the green in the stripes.
Drape: Pleat it the usual way with the pallu over your left shoulder, so the stripes fall straight through the pleats and the buttas line the hem.
Wear it to: bridal and wedding occasions, including the muhurtham, reception and family wedding functions.
