Kolam is the traditional Tamil floor drawing made of looped lines around a grid of dots, drawn at the doorstep each morning. Here two kolam designs alternate across the body, woven in zari.
Thamarai is the Tamil word for lotus. Here lotus flowers, buds and leaves rise along the gold zari border, woven in pink and green.
Kattam is the Tamil word for checks. Fine zari lines form the grid that frames each kolam.
Care Guide
Dry clean only. This is pure silk with pure zari, and it should not be washed at home.
- Dry clean only to preserve the richness of the silk and zari
- Store folded in a breathable muslin cloth or cotton bag, never in plastic for long periods
- Keep away from direct sunlight, moisture and perfume
- Use sweat pads with the blouse to protect the silk from moisture
- Refold along different lines every few months and air the saree in shade
- Fold with the zari facing inwards to retain its natural sheen
- Iron on a low silk setting from the reverse, with a cloth over the fabric. Never iron directly on the zari
- Apply perfume and hairspray before draping, never on the saree
With thoughtful care, a pure Kanchipuram silk saree can be cherished for decades and may become an heirloom.
Handloom Characteristics
This saree is handwoven using traditional Kanchipuram weaving techniques, so no two pieces are identical. The following are marks of hand weaving, not defects:
- Subtle variation in the texture and sheen of the silk across the body
- Minor irregularity in the size and spacing of the kolam motifs and the grid lines
- Slight variation in the shading of the lotus flowers and leaves from one repeat to the next
- Occasional loose threads on the reverse, where the zari and coloured threads are carried across the motifs
Colour Representation
We photograph every saree under neutral lighting to represent its tone as accurately as possible. However, slight variations may occur due to:
- Lighting conditions
- Fabric texture and weave
- Screen or device settings
The jamun purple can read as wine or aubergine depending on the light, and the pastel pink pallu and blouse can appear pink, peach or lilac. The gold zari border shifts between bright and antique gold.
If you would like more clarity, we are happy to assist with:
- Additional close-up photos
- A personalised video call appointment
These characteristics are inherent to hand weaving and are not considered defects. They are what make each Ayraa saree truly one of a kind.
Styling Suggestions
Blouse: The saree comes with a pastel pink blouse with a zari border, so the contrast is already built in. Use the zari border on the sleeve hems or along the back.
Stitching the blouse: Tell your tailor where you want the zari border to sit before the fabric is cut. Border placement has to be planned.
Jewellery: Antique gold or temple gold sits most naturally with the gold zari border. Pearls or pink stones pick up the lotus and the pallu.
Drape: The two borders are different, so decide which one you want at the hem before you pleat. The lotus border at the hem shows the flowers in full.
Wear it to: wedding celebrations, receptions and festive evenings, as a guest or family member.
