Zari brocade is a weave where the zari pattern covers the whole body of the saree, not only the border and pallu. Here zari panels in Kattam (checks) cover the black silk from edge to edge.
Yanai is the Tamil word for elephant and Mayil is the Tamil word for peacock. Both are traditional temple motifs of Kanchipuram weaving, woven here in pairs inside the checks, alternating with floral medallions.
Kattam is the Tamil word for checks. Here the checks are framed by zari bands, so each motif sits in its own square.
Care Guide
Dry clean only. This is pure silk with pure zari, and it should not be washed at home.
- Dry clean only to preserve the richness of the silk and zari
- Store folded in a breathable muslin cloth or cotton bag, never in plastic for long periods
- Keep away from direct sunlight, moisture and perfume
- Use sweat pads with the blouse to protect the silk from moisture
- Refold along different lines every few months and air the saree in shade
- Fold with the zari facing inwards to retain its natural sheen
- Iron on a low silk setting from the reverse, with a cloth over the fabric. Never iron directly on the zari
- Apply perfume and hairspray before draping, never on the saree
With thoughtful care, a pure Kanchipuram silk saree can be cherished for decades and may become an heirloom.
Handloom Characteristics
This saree is handwoven using traditional Kanchipuram weaving techniques, so no two pieces are identical. The following are marks of hand weaving, not defects:
- Subtle variation in the texture and sheen of the silk across the body
- Minor irregularity in the outline of the elephant, peacock and medallion motifs
- Slight variation in tone where the purple threadwork meets the zari
- Occasional loose threads on the reverse, where the zari is carried across the brocade and pallu
Colour Representation
We photograph every saree under neutral lighting to represent its tone as accurately as possible. However, slight variations may occur due to:
- Lighting conditions
- Fabric texture and weave
- Screen or device settings
Because the zari covers most of the body, the saree can read as gold and purple in bright light and as deep black and plum indoors. The purple threadwork can lean towards magenta or wine depending on the angle of the light.
If you would like more clarity, we are happy to assist with:
- Additional close-up photos
- A personalised video call appointment
These characteristics are inherent to hand weaving and are not considered defects. They are what make each Ayraa saree truly one of a kind.
Styling Suggestions
Blouse: The saree comes with a plain black blouse, which lets the brocade and gold pallu stand out. A purple or gold zari blouse makes the look richer for a wedding.
Jewellery: Gold temple jewellery suits the elephant and peacock motifs. Amethysts or rubies pick up the purple threadwork.
Drape: Pleat it the usual way with the pallu over your left shoulder, so the brocade shows through the pleats and the gold zari pallu is seen in full.
Wear it to: weddings, festive days and evening celebrations such as receptions.
